Be sure you subscribe to get the recording sheet and stay connected! Here’s how you can play a math game to reinforce the concept of absolute value using addition, subtraction, and multiplication:

Take a deck of cards and remove all face cards (Jack, Queen, King) and Jokers.

Shuffle the deck and deal four cards to each player.

Each player uses the four cards in their hand to create an expression that is as close to zero as possible using only addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

The player with the expression closest to zero (based on the absolute value of the result) wins the round and earns one point.

Play several rounds, with players drawing new cards each time, until one player reaches a predetermined number of points.

To reinforce the concept of absolute value, emphasize that the goal is to create an expression that is as close to zero as possible, regardless of whether the result is positive or negative.

This is a great way to practice basic arithmetic while also reinforcing the concept of absolute value. Good luck and have fun!
